DIY - Homemade Clay for Play

CLAY FOR PLAY

• 1 c. Flour
• 3 tbsp. Cream of Tartar
• 1/4 c. Salt
• 1 tbsp. Vegetable Oil
• 1 c. Distilled Water
• Natural Food Coloring
• 15–20 drops Essential Oils

Mix the above ingredients well and cook over medium heat while mixing continuously. The mixture will first begin to melt down before it starts to thicken. Before long, the mixture will start to ball up while you are stirring it. When it does this and no longer has any areas that look wet, it is ready for the next steps. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.

Add in desired Essential Oils and Food Coloring and knead by hand until combined.

Store in Essential Oil grade plastic containers until ready to use, or between uses.

Since this is a natural recipe and does not contain any preservatives, it is advised to check your dough before each play session for any type of breakdown. You do not have to refrigerate the dough (though you can if you wish); just be sure to have it in an air-tight container. Also, this dough does not dry out as fast during play, so it can be used for a few hours at a time. You may have to refresh it between play sessions by adding a tiny amount of water and kneading again.

Pinecone Firestarter

Cute idea from doTERRA Living Magazine.
https://www.doterra.com/US/en/brochures-magazines-doterra-living-fall-2017-autumn-pinecone-firestarter

  • Soy wax or beeswax
  • Pinecones
  • Cinnamon Bark essential oil
  • Clove essential oil
  • Wild Orange essential oil
  • String for dipping into wax
  • Colored crayons (optional)
  • Salt (optional)
Cut the string long enough to use for dipping the pinecone into the wax and tie a knot at the top of the pinecone.* In a double boiler or a metal bowl resting in pot of water, melt two to three crayons along with enough wax to coat your pine cone. Add essential oil; the more drops you put in, the stronger the scent will be. Holding the string, dip the pinecones and set them on wax paper to dry. Keep dipping and drying to create a thick layer of wax on the pinecones. Coat with salt immediately after the last wax coat, if desired.
Tips:Depending on the salt, the flames of the starters will burn a certain color (Epsom salts, white flame; table salt, yellow flame; salt substitute, violet flame). *Note: After you are done dipping you pinecone into the wax, leave one inch of wax-covered string to serve as a wick for easier lighting.

Flavored Toothpicks

These are so cool. Just fill a small bowl with enough essential oil to cover the bottom with about 1/8" oil and add toothpicks. Let them sit for at least 8 hours until all oil is absorbed. Then let them air dry for 24 hours. Store in a glass jar or a mint tin. Use any flavor you want. Peppermint is the most popular. I love grapefruit.
