Create Your Own Scent - Essential Oil Perfume or Air Freshener

10/14/2017

So many of the perfumes, body sprays and air fresheners we purchase over the counter are full of chemicals and toxins. Why not make your own? Try a combination of any of these to make your own personal scent. Mix with fractionated coconut oil and water for a body spray, or put in a diffuser or spray bottle for an air freshener.

To begin, choose essential oils that you believe will create a pleasant aromatherapy blend.
Go ahead and get creative! Start inhaling! But keep it simple.
Try and choose about five essential oils to begin with.

Do you know you like Citrus? Floral? Green? Keep these in mind.

Citrus – Lemon; Lime; Mandarin; Wild Orange; Petitgrain; Bergamot; Sunny Citrus;
Herbal Spice – Basil; Black Pepper; Clove; Rosemary; Thyme
Floral – Geranium; Lavender; Rose; Ylang Ylang; Whisper
Fruity – Juniper; Citrus Bliss
Green – Basil; Immortelle; Rosemary
Minty – Peppermint; Spearmint; Sage
Warm – Cedarwood; Clove; Ginger; Marjoram

We will now look and see if we have some oils from each of the following categories. It is not imperative, but if you can have at least one oil from each category, your scent will be perfectly balanced.

Base Notes (Fixative) – Thick; Earthy; Musky.
Noticed later after other scents subside; Staying power.

Middle Notes (Heart or Bouquet) – Lasts a couple hours.
Stays in the middle and draws the other scents together.

Top Notes (Head) – Thin; Volatile; Sharp but Light.
Most noticeable; Does not last long.

See if you can separate your five chosen oils into top, middle, and base notes. Ideally, you will have at least two top, two middle, and one base note.

Now start playing around. It's best to have perfume testers. Place a drop of your desired combination on the tester and inhale. Do this with a few different combinations. Then walk away. Come back 10-15 minutes later, (or at least smell some coffee beans in between). Start by holding the tester arm’s length away and giving it a little swirl. Then slowly move closer. It should have a slightly different aroma as it gets closer. Now put it down, walk away, and come back and try another tester.

This may seem like it takes a lot of time, but believe me, it's well worth it. If you are impatient, do the coffee bean cleanser in between. You can still save the testers and come back later, too.

Pinecone Firestarter

Cute idea from doTERRA Living Magazine.
https://www.doterra.com/US/en/brochures-magazines-doterra-living-fall-2017-autumn-pinecone-firestarter

  • Soy wax or beeswax
  • Pinecones
  • Cinnamon Bark essential oil
  • Clove essential oil
  • Wild Orange essential oil
  • String for dipping into wax
  • Colored crayons (optional)
  • Salt (optional)
Cut the string long enough to use for dipping the pinecone into the wax and tie a knot at the top of the pinecone.* In a double boiler or a metal bowl resting in pot of water, melt two to three crayons along with enough wax to coat your pine cone. Add essential oil; the more drops you put in, the stronger the scent will be. Holding the string, dip the pinecones and set them on wax paper to dry. Keep dipping and drying to create a thick layer of wax on the pinecones. Coat with salt immediately after the last wax coat, if desired.
Tips:Depending on the salt, the flames of the starters will burn a certain color (Epsom salts, white flame; table salt, yellow flame; salt substitute, violet flame). *Note: After you are done dipping you pinecone into the wax, leave one inch of wax-covered string to serve as a wick for easier lighting.

Homemade Powder Dishwasher Detergent

10/8/2017

This is a great way to have a natural dishwasher detergent without paying a high price. And it's so easy! The citric acid is optional, but feel free to order some on the internet and give it a try.

1 cup washing soda (like Arm & Hammer)
1 cup Borax Detergent Booster
1/2 cup Citric Acid (optional)
1/2 cup Salt
10 drops doTERRA essential oil (Lemon, Wild Orange, OnGuard, or Purify)
Mix together and stir. Store tightly covered in an 16 oz glass jar. Use one tablespoon per load with hot water.
I took the top off an old salt container and put it on a wide mouthed mason jar so I had a pour spout. Works great!

Note: Use vinegar as a rinsing agent.

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent Tablets

1 cup Borax
1/2 cup Epsom salt
1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
1/3 to 1/2 cup lemon juice
8 drops Lavender essential oil (or oil of choice)
Combine borax, epsom salt, essential oil, and washing soda in a bowl until well combined.
Add lemon juice 1 Tbsp. at a time until mixture is damp but not soaked, you want it to hold together and not be crumbly. Press mixture firmly into ice cube trays then tap on the counter to level out.
Allow to dry for at least 3-4 hours before removing
Store in air tight container.
To Use: Put 1 tablet in your dishwasher detergent tray. If you have hard water you may want to add some distilled white vinegar (a natural rinse aid) to your “Rinse” compartment. The vinegar is a water softener that helps prevent spotting on dishes.

Natural Hand Sanitizer using Foaming Pump Sprayer

10/2/2017

Great additional use for those extra foaming hand soap containers you have. A nice and natural way to sanitize your hands without those terrible antibacterial chemicals in store bought products.

2 Tablespoons Witch Hazel or water
2 Tablespoons aloe vera gel (optional)
1/8 teaspoon Vitamin E oil (optional)
5 drops doTERRA OnGuard and/or citrus essential oil

In a bowl combine aloe vera and Vitamin E oil if using (for moisturizing). Stir in essential oils and Witch Hazel or water. Fill a small foaming pump bottle. Shake before using. Pump onto hands & rub hands together for 5-10 seconds. (Omit water if you want a thicker consistency.) Try other oil combinations like Melaleuca, Lavender & Lemon or Eucalyptus, Rosemary & Lavender.

Carpet Stain Remover using Foam Soap Dispenser

10/2/2017

I was wondering what else I could reuse my old Foaming Pump Soap Dispensers for besides hand soap. I discovered this is one recipe that works very well. It foams up slightly so it's easy to work into the carpet.

Feel free to use regular pump bottle if you'd like.

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water and add a couple drops of your favorite doTERRA citrus oil. (Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, ...)

Spray directly on stain. Wait for several minutes and clean with brush and warm soapy water.

For greasy stains, sprinkle with corn starch and wait 15-30 minutes before vacuuming.

You can mix 1/4 cup each of salt, borax and vinegar for a heavy duty cleaner. Rub it in and let it sit for a couple hours.
